2012 Conference

If numbers don't lie, the 2012 ANNA Meeting in London, Ontario was a tremendous success. Hosted by CF Industries Courtright September 24-28, the event drew nearly 350 attendees, including more than 150 delegates representing producer organizations around the world. A conference record 63 companies and approximately 190 staff members displayed their products and services in the lively exhibit hall. Twenty five countries were represented at this truly international event.

ANNA Conference Chairman David Hind (Orica) reports that 43 papers were presented during the informative technical sessions. Peter Fauconnier of Yara won best AN Paper with his presentation "Simple Detection System for AN Decomposition in AN Solution Storage Tanks. Hind took the prize for the top Nitric Acid Paper with his presentation "Stop the Noise: Alarm Management." According to Hind, "Both papers resulted in significant discussion in the hallways at breaks and during the exhibitor program."
Discussion of alarm management wasn't the only buzz going on during ANNA 2012. Hind noted the extremely professional papers, excellent networking, and participation during the week. "It was rare to see someone standing by themselves," he says.
Safety was at the forefront of this year's session. The Organizing Committee led by Hind, Hans Reuvers (BASF), Peter Hein (CSBP Ltd.), Leif Rasmussen (Yara), Frank Wolf (AN Resources), Doug Chandler (Dyno Nobel), and Dan Kilpatrick (Terra Industries) sought a program that would advance safety performance, environmental awareness, and technical excellence. By all measures, they achieved their goals. Round table discussions ranged from Fire Response and Contamination Issues to Steam-out Practices. According to Hind, the sessions were well attended, drawing both producers and exhibitors. "Technical knowledge and new information from the exhibitors was well received," he notes.

Attendees also took time to catch their breath during and meet with old and new friends during the week. The conference featured the annual Golf Scramble, arranged by Robert Remkes (Mel-Mon Environmental), and an excursion to watch a play in neighboring Stratford, arranged by host company CF Industries. Special thanks are in order to Kim DeMarsh, Regan Pfaff, and Pat Armstrong (CF Industries) for their efforts in planning the 2012 Conference, arranging tours/events and hosting a special Sunday evening reception at the London Hilton headquarters hotel.

Continuing what has become an ANNA tradition, Exhibit Hall Chair Burke Allen (Alloy Engineering) and Treasurer Mike Gervais (Geib Refining) played the role of dueling MCs on Thursday night, a fun and final evening in the Exhibit Hall that featured entertainment, prizes, and more than a few laughs. The Exhibitor Group built up to the Thursday grand finale, hosting networking/problem-solving receptions on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Though the busy meeting had to come to an end on Friday, talk of next year's event had already started. Fertiberia will host ANNA 2013 in Spain, and Espindesa will organize the Exhibit Hall and associated activities. Be sure to visit www.an-na.org frequently for updates on this information-packed, can't miss-event. Add it all up, and you can count on another great event in Europe next September!
